SALI - Dugi Otok

When the gods created the world, they were especially generous here. In past milleniums after the deluge from the seizmic shock wich shook the Earth, islands appeared like lace between the red-hot sun and the sky blue sea. This area, of unrepeatable landscape only stretches for about 70 square kilometres. The heart of this gulf is Telascica - 8,200 metres long.

This is one of the biggest, safest and most beautiful natural harbours in the Adriatic, which has 25 bays, 5 small islets, and a coastline 68 kilometres long containing a unique natural fenomenon - a salt water lake. For as long as 125 years, alert lighthouse keepers have kept watch from the solitary cliffs above the labyrinth of secret entrances to the gulf, which is surrounded by 14 larger and smaller islands.

Like gigantic scenery from the theatre of the gods, heady cliffs 166 metres high protect the gulf from the wild, frenzied gale force waves of the open sea. Around about are beautifully cultivared meadows, and on the hillsides, rich Mediterranean vegetation with 300 species of flora and equally rich fauna. The undersea world has more than 250 kinds of plants, and 300 kinds of sea creatures.

On gentle summer nights, the silhouette of prehistoric Illyrian ruins, appear mysteriously on the horizon, and the last remains of a rustic Roman villa, slowly sink into the sea at Mala Proversa.

Still standing everywhere, are witnesses to centuries-past life, such as, for example, the little Church of Sv. Ivan (Saint John) at Stivanje polju. Here, it is not difficult to believe in secret buried treasure and stories about the former inhabitants who were supposed to have five little horns on their heads.
